YOUNGSTERS from a local school joined the Friends of Wilthorpe Park to plant some trees as part of a special scheme recently.
A Tree For Everyone Grant Fund is for people in South Yorkshire who would like to plant trees on land where planting rights are secured, and where the trees will provide a public benefit and enhance environmental sustainability.
The funding has been used to plant trees at Wilthorpe Park and youngsters from Wilthorpe Junior and Infants got involved last week.
A spokesperson for the community group said: “The Friends of Wilthorpe Park applied for funding earlier in the year, and were lucky enough to be granted an amount of money from the South Yorkshire Mayor’s ‘A Tree For All’ funding pot.
“Although we purchased the trees in early March we held back on planting them.
“We are so glad we did too because of the very dry summer we have had.
“A number of Wilthorpe school children came along to help them plant the many different varieties of fruit trees creating a lovely community orchard.
“In the past two weeks the group, with the help of the Barnsley Council have planted a number of different varieties of trees.”
