KNITTED poppies will be in bloom to celebrate Remembrance Day.

Cawthorne’s Crafty Ladies Group have laboured to create a display of knitted poppies, honouring those who gave their lives.

Poppies will be displayed throughout the village and this year, the group is proud to have added a ‘Flanders Field’ on the village green to the display.

Displays will be established in multiple areas near the village’s main roads for maximum visibility.

A combination of this year and last year’s efforts saw more than 8,000 poppies crafted.

Crafting efforts have extended far across the country, with the group receiving poppies through the post from as far as Brighton.

In order to view the poppies, Cawthorne Methodist Church’s schoolroom will be open to the public tomorrow and next Saturday - from 11am and 10am respectively - with Mayor of Barnsley Dave Leech in attendance at the latter event.

Margaret Cooper, senior steward for Cawthorne Methodist Church, said: “I feel that by creating these poppy displays we are showing our respect and our pride for the people who lost their lives.

“It’s good for us to reflect upon this and not to just brush it under the carpet.

“We need to remember them in our history, it’s part of our culture and we shouldn’t forget that.”
