CAMERAS will be installed in home-to-school private hire vehicles to provide better safety for drivers and passengers.

Following a pilot scheme which saw CCTV becoming mandatory in all council-licensed Hackney carriages, the decision to replicate the scheme in contracted school taxis is set to be approved on Wednesday.

A council report said: “There are surplus funds remaining from the initial grant and it is proposed to offer the installation of CCTV to our private hire vehicles that hold home-to-school transport contracts on behalf of the local authority.

“This group of drivers experiences similar concerns regarding challenging behaviours.

“CCTV will also enhance safeguarding protocols and contribute to enhancing protection for passengers and drivers.”
