A TOP badminton player has visited a Hoyland primary school.

In partnership with Great Athletes, Jenny Wallwork - a badminton player renowned for her skills on both national and international stages - visited St Helen’s Catholic Primary School, on November 18.

Great Athletes is a nationwide initiative that connects elite athletes with schools across the UK, promoting sports and movement.

Schools then participate in fundraising activities that contribute towards their sports provision.

Last year, the school used funds to buy new equipment for the pupils.

During Jenny’s visit she delivered a powerful assembly, sharing her sporting journey, a question and answer session - and a high-energy fitness circuit.

The children learned about the importance of health and fitness and how it can set them up to live happy, healthy lives.

Pupils were highly engaged by Jenny’s fitness circuit, moving their bodies to upbeat pop music as they experienced different exercise stations.

Adam Ainsworth, head of school, said: “The children love it - they’ve all been so eager to take part.

“Last year we managed to fundraise plenty of money.

“They get prizes depending on how much money they have raised.

“It’s important for them to see that no matter their abilities, they can go on to become sporting champions.”

Jenny added: “I absolutely love coming to visit schools.

“To see the children so enthusiastic is amazing, but its also important to understand about sports and movement.

“It’s really important and will help them throughout their lives.

“The response that we have got so far has been amazing.

“Initially they were a little bit quiet and apprehensive, as soon as the music started there were smiles, laughter and cheering.”
