FIRE officers in Barnsley have become the latest to earn a major national accreditation confirming their commitment towards ending violence against women and girls.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’s ‘White Ribbon’ accreditation recognises the service’s commitment to preventing harassment and abuse, aligning with White Ribbon UK - the leading charity engaging men and boys to end violence against women.

As an accredited organisation, SYFR will deliver a comprehensive multi-year plan to transform its staff culture, systems and the wider community it operates in.

Some of the actions that will be taken include broadening e-learning to include topics such as coercive control and consent for all staff and appointing ambassadors within departments to advocate positive attitudes and behaviour and establishing a comprehensive communication plan.

Chief fire officer Chris Kirby, said: “I am immensely proud that South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has achieved White Ribbon accreditation.

“This recognition is a testament to our unwavering commitment to creating a safer, more respectful environment for everyone - both within our service and across the communities we serve.

“We are determined to challenge and change attitudes, empower our staff to be positive role models and take meaningful action to end violence against women and girls.

“Our pledge is not just symbolic, it is a promise to lead by example and ensure that respect, equality and safety are at the heart of everything we do.”
