MORE than 70 parks have been earmarked for improvements through a council scheme, it has been confirmed.

A total of £2.1m has been earmarked to improve parks in the town and at last week’s full council meeting, it was revealed that a total of 73 sites have been identified.

Of the £2.1m, £1.8m is planned to be spent so far.

Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “Park services carried out an audit of district level parks during July, with prioritisation work taking place in August, in consultation with elected members.

“Orders are currently being placed with suppliers and contractors.

“Works include refreshing safety surfacing, improvements to children’s play equipment, upgrades to MUGAs, new signage, tree and bulb planting, access footways, seating, and bins.

“To date, 73 parks are earmarked for improvement across all 21 wards with a total investment so far of £1.8m.

“I know that members and residents are excited to see these improvements delivered on the ground, and it is a real demonstration of this council’s continued commitment to investing in our parks and green spaces in every part of Barnsley.”
