MUSEUM curators were delighted to accept local war medals given to a Barnsley Pal to add to its collection documenting the town’s wartime history.

The medals, donated by Couns Joe Hayward and Mayor of Barnsley Dave Leech, were awarded to Private Richard Butcher of the 13th York and Lancaster Regiment.

The Victory medal and British War medal were given to Private Butcher, who served in the Barnsley Pals during the Great War.

They were presented to people who served in the First World War to commemorate the victory to recognise their service and contribution.

Curators in the Barnsley Town Hall-based museum’s team are now on a mission to learn more about Private Butcher’s life.

Since 2014, the two councillors have been determined to bring medals awarded to individual Barnsley Pals back to the town.

The medals will be displayed at the Experience Barnsley museum to celebrate the spirit of Barnsley’s wartime history.

Coun Hayward said: “We are really pleased that we could donate these medals to share with our communities.

“World War One was a monumental time in history and for Barnsley.

“Many local men died bravely in battle and it is important to remember them and hear their stories.”

Coun Leech added: “We are pleased that the medals have come home to Barnsley.
