A PRIMARY school on the edge of the town centre has been given a prestigious award in recognition of its teachers’ work to bring the world into its classrooms.

Burton Road Primary School was the recipient of the International School Award, which celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education.

The school’s international work includes eating a French continental breakfast, learning how to say some basic greetings in French, watching a cartoon in French, listening to French songs and creating actions, and researching French-speaking countries and famous native speakers.

Headteacher Matthew Harris said: “We are delighted to receive recognition for the outstanding work that we do with teaching and embracing French language and culture but also on how outward-looking we are as an international school.

“We feel that is vital to develop our pupils as positive future citizens and lifelong learners.”

Shannon West, head of UK schools for the British Council, added: ‘Burton Road Primary’s international work has earned the school well-deserved recognition.

“We are delighted and proud that they’re committed to developing a whole school approach to embedding and celebrating international work.

“The dedication from everyone is enriching education and supporting globally aware young people and the development of key skills.

“We thank all involved in this important work - embedding an international ethos across a school can lead to International School Award accreditation, which is the highest level of the award.”
