Barnsley came crashing down to Championship reality after a 3-1 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday night.
After the optimism of Saturday’s 1-0 win against Middlesbrough, Keith Hill’s side were reminded of the brutal realities of life in the Championship as Wolves and their Premier League squad easily swept away their Yorkshire visitors. But although Wolves dominated the encounter – it could have quite easily been five or six – the Reds can take a lot of positives away from the clash.
They showed energy, effort, admirable team spirit, and when Wolves threatened to open the floodgates at 3-0, the Reds bounced back to score a fine goal through star winger Tomasz Cywka, who notched for the first time in Barnsley colours.
It was Wanderers’ first win at Molineux since December 2011 but their seventh consecutive home victory against Barnsley, who were famously their promotion rivals under Mark McGhee when Barnsley reached the Premier League 15 years ago.
Hill said afterwards: "Wolves are like a Premier League team and have great quality.
“We know we are not going to win every game but it’s important that we learn from losses.
“But I’m proud of my players for not giving in."
