A MAN at the heart of education in Barnsley for over two decades is set to retire.

Mark Wood, the chief finance officer at Wellspring Academy Trust, also worked at Barnsley Council in the education sector.

Mark joined the trust in April 2017 when it was still in its infancy.

Today due to Mark’s commitment to his role, there is a thriving community of 33 academies, which is a true testament to his pivotal role in financial leadership that has helped shape Wellspring.

Chief executive Mark Wilson said: “Mark has contributed as much to the soul and the spirit of the organisation as he has to its financial and operational management.

“Mark has contributed character, personality and leadership charisma - sometimes intangible or invisible attributes that are no less decisive or impactful than any other professional characteristic.

“Mark will be greatly missed by us all.

“As much as we will feel the absence of such an invaluable colleague, we’re also excited for Mark as he embarks on this next chapter.
