Joseph Bramah was one of Britain’s most prolific innovators.

While most locals may associate the engineering icon with the local Wetherspoon pub that boasts his name - everyone will have benefited from one of his inventions, perhaps without even realising.

His work laid the path for modern engineering, manufacturing and security systems.

Modern technology holds many of his inventions at its core - meaning Bramah’s work is just as influential today as the 17th and 18th centuries.

The following five inventions have influenced modern technology still in use today.

Hydraulic press

Bramah’s most transformative invention is the hydraulic press, patented in 1795.

It operates on Pascal’s principle, using fluid pressure to generate immense force.

Bramah is considered one of the fathers of hydraulic engineering because of this device.

What was known as the Bramah Press was first put to use at the Tower of London in 1806.

The hydraulic press is now used in: metal forming and forging car crushing and recycling, industrial stamping and moulding and construction equipment.

Modern hydraulic systems are more complex, but the core principle remains exactly what Bramah first invented.

The Bramah lock

In 1784, Bramah introduced a new pick‑resistant lock.

Bramah was so certain about the lock’s security that he promised 200 guineas to anyone who could pick it - a challenge that stood for 67 years.

The lock used a cylindrical key and precision‑engineered sliders, the design proving to be far ahead of its time.

In modern times, variants of the Bramah lock mechanism are still manufactured and used.

The lock remains a symbol of mechanical security innovation, cementing Bramah’s legacy as an icon who has stood the test of time.

Flush toilet improvements

Before Bramah, early flush toilets were unreliable and prone to leaking.

Bramah revolutionised the water closet with an improved valve and sealing system that prevented odours and provided consistent flushing. His design became the basis for modern toilet mechanisms.

His innovations directly influenced the development of the modern siphon‑based flush systems used worldwide.

While toilets have evolved, the base idea of a sealed, reliable flushing mechanism traces back to Bramah’s engineering.

Beer pump

Bramah also invented an early beer pump, enabling beer to be drawn from cellar casks to the bar counter.

Patented in 1797, this innovation revolutionised pub service and remains a core part of beer‑dispensing technology today.

The principle of pumping beer from a remote cask originates with Bramah’s design.

Bank note numbering machine

To prevent forgery and improve financial record‑keeping - Bramah invented a machine that automatically printed sequential serial numbers on bank notes.

Modern currency production still relies on automated numbering systems based on the same concept.

Joseph Bramah’s legacy lives on because his inventions solved practical problems with forward‑thinking engineering that rewrote history. The hydraulic press modernised manufacturing, his lock redefined security and his improvements to the flush toilet revolutionised sanitation. Even his beer pump and bank note‑numbering machine reshaped how people work, trade, and socialise.

What makes Bramah such an important figure is not just the range of his ideas but their long-lasting impact.

More than two centuries after his inventions, the principles he introduced have prevail - proving that unique thinking can transcend its era and continue shaping the world long after its creator is gone.
