PROTESTERS from Barnsley have been demonstrating in the town, calling for the release of a woman on a hunger strike inside prison.
Heba Muraisi was taken into custody in November 2024 in connection with action against Elbit Systems in Filton, Bristol, a company that supplies weapons to Israel.
She is being held at New Hall prison in Wakefield and is one of four Palestine activists on hunger strike.
Sunday was the 64th day of her strike and she is now unable to speak.
She is not due for trial until June.
Supporters of Barnsley Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Barnsley Stand Up To Racism and Barnsley Your Party have demonstrated in town and, with hundreds of others outside the prison, calling for her release.
Supporters concerned about Heba’s health have asked Justice secretary David Lammy to meet with her lawyers but he has refused to do so.
A spokesperson for Barnsley Palestine Solidarity campaign said: “Millions of people in this country have marched in protests against the destruction of Gaza by Israel.
“Some people, including Heba, have tried to stop arms being produced for Israeli planes by Elbit weapons systems.
“She is innocent until proven guilty but has now been imprisoned for 14 months.
“When the IRA prisoners went on hunger strike in the 1980s Bobby Sands died after 66 days, Kieran Doherty lasted the longest and died after 73 days.
“This means Heba is in grave danger. The home secretary should order her release now.”
