Barnsley have signed goalkeeper Owen Goodman on loan until the end of the season from Crystal Palace to replace Murphy Cooper who has been sent back to QPR.
Goodman, 22, spent the first half of the season on loan at Barnsley’s neighbours Huddersfield Town – playing ten league games and two EFL Trophy matches. He was sent off at Oakwell in a 3-1 defeat in August, for taking out David McGoldrick having made an error for Davis Keillor-Dunn’s opener. He returned to the side after a ban but was benched in November and the Terriers sent him back to Premier League Palace this window.
Goodman is a Canada youth international who was an ever-present for AFC Wimbledon last season, keeping 25 clean sheets as they gained promotion from League Two, having spent the previous campaign at Colchester United.
Head coach Conor Hourihane said: “There was a clause in Murphy’s contract from both directions on ‘would he stay for the second half of the season or not?’ We felt in this situation, we have to wheel and deal and do things we feel are necessary.
“We’re shaking up the back line.
“Eoghan O’Connell will definitely help with his experience.
“We had an opportunity to change the goalkeeper because Murphy was on loan. We felt two new bodies in that area may give everyone a new energy, a new voice and new look that would help us in the second half of the season.
“I want to put on record that he is a top, top person. As a loan player he bought into the culture and had a permanent mentality. He was first class. I can’t speak highly enough of him.
“His performances were OK. He was probably involved in situations in terms of goals conceded that he would have liked to not have been involved in.
“He was used more heavily than I would have liked, in terms of shots on goal. It’s an area we’re trying to freshen up in and he’s been involved in a change I think was necessary.
“Owen has obviously been let go at Huddersfield, we wanted a replacement who fitted our profile and looked maybe a bit different. Owen fits that bill.”
