GROWING demand for cancer services is set to be alleviated after a charity struck a major milestone in its fundraising quest.

Weston Park’s £1.85m project to purchase and install a life-saving MRI simulator cancer scanning machine is nearing its final stages, after it was announced that donations had reached £1.4m.

This sum has been raised thanks to the collective efforts of individuals, businesses and organisations across the region.

This includes the charity’s corporate partner Westfield Health, which has played a pivotal role throughout by matching donations up to the value of £500,000.

This cutting-edge tool will enable clinicians to deliver radiotherapy with far greater accuracy - sparing healthy tissue, reducing side effects and boosting survival rates.

Chief executive Emma Clarke said: “The way our community has rallied together behind the appeal has been nothing short of inspiring.

“I’d like to personally thank everyone who has helped us to reach this fantastic £1.4m fundraising milestone - your generosity and kindness will save lives.

“The appeal’s fundraising goal of £1.85m is now in our sights and every pound raised takes us one step closer to bringing this revolutionary MRI simulator to South Yorkshire.”

Although based in Broomhill, scores of cancer-stricken Barnsley residents will be able to access the service.

Dr Kash Purohit, chair of the appeal board, added: “As a retired consultant clinical oncologist, I know just how much of an impact the MRI simulator will make on patients at Weston Park Cancer Centre.

“The scanner will allow oncologists to greatly enhance the accuracy of radiotherapy.

“Not only will this transform the treatment experience for patients, but it should improve outcomes across the board.

“We’re deeply grateful to everyone who has donated to the appeal so far, and we’re looking forward to the brilliant fundraising events on offer in 2026.”
