WORSBROUGH Bridge manager Lee Morris admits Dearne and District have the one automatic promotion place from NCEL Division One ‘virtually sewn up’ but believes his side can have an historic season in league and cup.

The Briggers are third, 13 points behind leaders Dearne, with a game in hand, and 14 clear of the teams outside the four play-off places.

They won 7-0 at home to Goole on Saturday, a second straight win after three straight defeats.

Manager Lee Morris said: “If I am honest, which I am, I think Dearne have virtually got the title sewn up.

“But there are 12 games to go and you never know, we just have to keep putting points on the board.

“As much as we would like to catch Dearne, we’re the same distance away from the clubs beneath us outside the play-offs.

“We have to keep pushing to make sure we finish in the play-offs.

“There are no gimmes in this league, no one rolls over and gives you points.”

Worsbrough are just 12 points off last season’s club record tally of 76 and still have 12 games left.

Morris said: “I said at the start of the season we wanted to beat last season’s total and we felt it would be hard with what’s in the league.

“We’re well on the way to doing that and that should put us in the play-offs.

“Then it’s anybody’s game in the play-offs. We have 12 big games left, hopefully 14 with the play-offs and 16 with the Sheffield Senior Cup.”

Bridge are in the semi-final of the Sheffield Senior Cup in which they are due to visit Barnsley under 21s on Tuesday, February 24 at 7.30pm.

The game is expected to be played on the outer pitches at Oakwell.

“It’s great for us and also the under 21s of Barnsley to test themselves in men’s football. You want to play the big club in your town.

“It’s one for all of us to look forward to. It would be great to get to the final but it will be a tough game.”

Against Goole, top-scorer Keelan Grist scored a hat-trick with two penalties while Harrison Marvin bagged a brace and the other scorers were Lloyd Smith and Connor Glavin. Bridge netted six in the second half.

Morris said: “It was very pleasing.

“It was good to get the amount of goals we got, against a good team. We probably should have scored more as well.

“There were people panicking when we lost three in a row but you won’t go through a season without a blip unless you are Arsenal’s ‘invincibles’.

“It wasn’t that we were playing badly, people were very very clinical against us.

“To get two wins on the bounce and get back on track is pleasing.”

Dearne and District’s game at Doncaster City was called off.

They are 12 points clear in the only automatic promotion place.

They are now due to visit mid-table Louth Town on Saturday before a run of games on the following three weekends against teams in the bottom third in South Leeds, Nostell and fellow Barnsley club Athersley Rec.

Athersley Rec drew 1-1 at fellow relegation-battlers Ilkley Town who scored a late leveller. Rec had won last week to move out of the drop zone and took the lead through Kane Reece.

They are now one place and three points clear of the relegation zone, with 12 matches left to play.

Wombwell Town lost 6-1 at second-placed Beverley Town in the Premier Division. Morgan James scored for the visitors. Town are last, eight points adrift of safety, having not won in 18 league games since September.

They have 13 to play, starting at home to mid-table Eccleshill United on Saturday.

Penistone Church did not play this week and are nine points clear of the relegation zone ahead of their trip to Albion Sports who are 16th.
