AN animal-loving youngster has been nominated for a Young Champions Award.

Bonnie Hewitt, aged ten, is a tireless campaigner for the Dogs Trust - challenging herself to walk or run 50 miles throughout February.

The youngster has taken the challenge in her stride, showing kindness and resilience that goes far beyond her years.

Bonnie’s house could be mistaken for a small petting zoo, owning a hamster, two rats and a dog - with her aunt’s tortoise and three cats just across the road.

Her idea came into fruition when she presented a spreadsheet to her parents with fundraising ideas for animal charities.

Bonnie’s big heart resonated with locals, smashing her fundraising target even before February rolled around.

Currently, her fundraiser sits at £610, more than doubling her original goal.

Her hard work hasn’t gone unrecognised, with the charity’s team inviting Bonnie to visit Dogs Trust’s London and Leeds centres - where she will be able to look after the furry friends for a day.

Bonnie’s mum, Sophie, told the Chronicle about how her daughter has been ‘obsessed’ with animals from a young age - and has noble aspirations to become a vet,

She said: “After wanting to raise money for animal charities for a while now, Bonnie has decided to become a tiny hero for big paws.

“She has taken this on with so much enthusiasm and we are so proud of her kindness and determination.

“Her fundraising target was reached before February and we are completely blown away by everybody’s donations and support.

“She has been invited by Dogs Trust to visit their centres for the day and to help out with the dogs, which is a dream come true for her.

“It’s amazing that she’s doing these walks rain or shine, she’s determined to get involved every day.
