A HUGE power cut which impacted almost 300 homes saw blankets, hot drinks and food offered to affected residents on Wednesday night.

Predominantly impacting the Rockingham ward, a voltage fluctuation caused disruption overnight, resulting in so-called ‘warm spaces’ being set up for those in need.

Northern Powergrid apologised to residents for the disruption and confirmed hotel accommodation had also been provided.

“We understand how disruptive this has been, and our teams have been on site working continuously to carry out repairs.

“To support customers we’ve put a range of welfare measures in place, including vans offering hot drinks, power banks and blankets, as well as a hot food vendor providing free meals.

“We have provided details of two warm hubs in the area where customers can go to stay warm, and customers have been updated throughout via text messages, video messages and door‑knocking from our teams.

“Our team is visiting customers directly, and we’ve offered hotel accommodation to customers and anyone currently without heating.

“We are also offering support with taxi costs for anyone who wishes to stay with family or friends.”

Coun Sherry Holling added: “I’ve been out speaking with residents across Birdwell and Hoyland following the Northern Powergrid transformer breakdown that caused the black-out.

“While power has now been restored, it’s clear that many households are dealing with the aftermath of what appears to have been a significant power surge.

“Several residents have told me about damage to appliances including heating boilers and I’ve spoken directly with the engineers on site who are working through repairs as quickly as they can.
