CONOR Hourihane is set to take charge of his 50th game as Barnsley head coach at Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
The 35-year-old started his first managerial role on an interim basis almost a year ago following the sacking of Darrell Clarke. The former Reds captain has won 17, drawn 12 and lost 20 games in all competitions, with Barnsley scoring 83 goals under him and conceding 98 with three clean sheets.
Hourihane told the Chronicle: “I have learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fifty up has gone pretty quickly.
“There have been some tough moments and good moments.
“Last season was difficult because there wasn’t time to change much then I really enjoyed pre-season.
“We have tried to stay true to the principles of how I want to play through the season but it’s changed a little bit. We’re in a position now where I know what I want – wingers, a back four. The fans hadn’t seen as many home wins and performances in previous times and we’ve changed that but we’ve lost the away form. We need to find the balance.
“I wanted to win more games than I have. The fans have been terrific and the players have been really, really good – particularly the ones who were here in pre-season and we’ve built that base. We’ve been unfortunate in games and a little bit naive in games.
“I am really passionate about being a head coach and really hungry to be a successful one and really enjoying my time here while it’s continuing.”
