BARNSLEY Town Hall’s clock which councillors said would be working ‘for the next 100-plus years’ following refurbishment is in need of repair yet again after it stopped ticking last week.

The iconic building, which opened in 1933, had a broken clock since June, with its hands stuck at seven minutes to 12.

Barnsley Council hired specialist workers to repair the clock and it was confirmed earlier this month that it should be good to go for the next 100 years, only for it to stop working yet again.

The council has confirmed they have contacted the workers once again and have asked for patience while further work takes place.

Coun Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “The clock has unfortunately stopped working again despite recent major repairs.

“The repair and rebuild was complete before Christmas and an extended period of testing was carried out before the mechanism was installed back in the clock tower.

“The mechanism worked perfectly under testing for a full month, from January 4 to February 4, when it was finally installed again and appeared to be working.

“Unfortunately it stopped again last week, and our specialist contractors have been contacted to diagnose and repair the issue as soon as possible.”
