A TREASURED family heirloom has been discovered and will be passed down.
Ray Cooling, from Wombwell, recently unearthed an award that was given to his father, the former Barnsley FC and Mansfield Town player, Roy.
Roy was a great cricketer too and this was recognised with an award from The News Chronicle for his batting performance in a match in May, 1935.
Roy was playing for John Street Boys’ School back then and as part of his award he received an autographed bat from the legendary Yorkshire and England batsman Herbert Sutcliffe.
A picture showing Roy with the bat and the award has also been discovered.
Roy will now pass the award on to his son, Oliver, who is also a keen sportsman.
