A GRIMETHORPE man who headbutted a steward has been banned from attending football matches for three years.

Brandon Bashforth pleaded guilty to assault, entering the pitch and using threatening words.

The offences took place during Barnsley Football Club’s away clash against Reading on January 24.

During the match - which ended in a 2-2 draw - Bashforth entered the pitch and attempted to reach the home supporters’ section.

When a steward tried to stop him, he pushed the steward and headbutted him in the face causing the victim to sustain a minor injury.

The 28-year-old, of High Street, was arrested by Thames Valley Police and was sentenced at Reading Magistrates’ Court last week.

He was given the banning order along with a £600 fine for assault, a £100 fine for entering the pitch, £200 in victim compensation and £85 in costs.

PC Steve Mountain said: “Violence towards stewards, staff or supporters will never be tolerated.

“This banning order sends a clear message that those who choose to involve themselves in disorder at football matches will face significant consequences.

“A football banning order will prevent Bashforth from attending regulated football matches across the UK and can also include restrictions on travel, particularly during international fixtures.

“They are a powerful tool that helps protect fans, staff and the wider community by keeping those intent on causing trouble away from our stadiums.
