AN investigation into suspected avian influenza is being carried out after two swans died.

The swans were reported at Wombwell Ings, run by the RSPB, who are now looking into the case.

More commonly known as bird flu, it’s thought to be the second outbreak in Barnsley after two dead birds - which tested positive - were found at Scout Dyke reservoir in January.

A spokesperson for RSPB said: “Unfortunately avian influenza continues to be a concern for us and is deadly to swans.

“Since October last year we have seen a big increase in waterfowl cases and the risk level for wild birds across Great Britain has been increased to very high. /

“We would also advise avoiding feeding waterfowl at this time, as feeding these birds could encourage them to congregate where they are being fed and increase the risk of the virus spreading.

“The RSPB is working closely with partners and we are pushing for the essential action needed to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks, limit their impacts and for populations to recover and reach healthy numbers able to withstand disease threats.”
