Substitute Charlie Lennon scored a 95th-minute leveller on his debut as Barnsley drew 1-1 at home to relegation-battlers Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening.
The Latics led 1-0 after dominating the first half then but the Reds improved after the break and, with Wigan having a man sent off late on, they found the leveller.
The Reds remain 12th in League One, eight points off the top six and nine clear of the relegation zone.
Conor Hourihane made one change from the side that drew at Mansfield on Saturday. Reyes Cleary returned to the starting line-up in place of Tom Bradshaw who dropped to the bench with Barnsley playing a 4-2-3-1.
After a slow start to the game, Patrick Kelly gifted the ball to Joe Taylor who ran into the box but took it wide then scuffed a shot into the side netting. Luca Connell then saw a pass intercepted and Callum Wright’s deflected shot from the edge of the box was beaten away by Owen Goodman. The goalkeeper then pushed away a Taylor strike from 25 yards after another Connell mistake.
Barnsley’s first half-chance saw David McGoldrick latch onto a long kick by goalkeeper Goodman but he only got a slight touch through to the goalkeeper amid claims of a foul by Jensen Weir.
It was a similar incident at the other end which led to the opener as Sam Tickle caught a corner then kicked downfield to Joe Taylor who got away from Connell too easily and lobbed Goodman.
Wright then hit the crossbar from just inside box after Barnsley could not clear a cross from the right. A cross from the left was then missed by both centre-backs and fell to Taylor whose shot from 15 yards was impressively pushed out of the bottom left corner by Goodman.
In the second half, Connell curled a 20-yard free-kick over the bar then substitute Tom Bradshaw headed over from a Cleary cross and Adam Phillips, another replacement, saw a 25-yard blast pushed over by Tickle. At the other end, Weir’s free-kick went just wide of the bottom right corner and Wright shot over twice from distance.
Lennon made his Barnsley debut off the bench. He cut in from the left and had a 20-yard shot which Tickle saved easily.
Wright was sent off on 88 minutes after picking up a second booking for tripping up O’Keeffe. From the resulting free-kick, Connell’s 25-yard effort was tipped onto the bar by Tickle. O’Keeffe brilliantly beat two defenders on the right then his deflected shot hit the outside of the post.
The leveller saw McGoldrick’s long-range shot pushed away by Tickle but Lennon turned in from close range.
