A LOCAL dementia charity has encouraged people to use their weekly events in a bid to prevent loneliness and isolation.
Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support (BIADS) was established in 2009, offering services to assist those living with dementia and their carers within the Barnsley borough.
The desire was to establish a charity that was not only independent but could guarantee that all funds and donations received stayed within Barnsley.
They run weekly events for locals and are urging more people to attend, including their dementia disco which takes place on Wednesdays at 1.30pm.
Louise Bligh, activity team leader, told the Chronicle: “The programme includes a variety of activities such as music sessions, gentle exercise, arts and crafts, reminiscence workshops, and social gatherings - all carefully designed to support wellbeing, stimulate memory, and encourage positive interaction.
“We understand that living with dementia can be challenging, not just for individuals but also for their carers and our aim is to create a space where everyone feels comfortable, valued, and supported while enjoying time together.
“The sessions are led by experienced staff and volunteers who are trained in dementia awareness, ensuring that all activities are accessible, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone involved.
“A carer must accompany a person with dementia to all our activities.
“Our newest activity session is our ‘dementia disco’ which takes place on Wednesday afternoons at 1.30pm.”
