A couple and their young child escaped after embers from a stray firework set the roof of their house on fire.

Firefighters were called to George Street in Cudworth at about 4.40am today.

It is thought a stray firework set alight a plastic wendyhouse in the garden of the property, which smouldered for some hours.

The embers from that fire blew on to the roof of the couple's home, causing another fire.

The couple, their child and dog were alerted by smoke alarms and by neighbours and had left the property by the time firefighters from Barnsley and Cudworth arrived.

Nobody was injured, though there was some smoke damage to the roof of the house.

The crews remained at the scene for about two hours and a spokesman said it was believed the fire was accidental.
