A COMMEMORATIVE walkway will stand as a lasting tribute to Barnsley’s armed forces community.
Last Friday, six new stones were officially unveiled at the walkway in the Barnsley Sixth Form College’s garden.
The ceremony brought together members of the armed forces community, families, veterans and local residents to honour service and sacrifice.
An opening speech was given by Coun Dave Leech, the Mayor of Barnsley, and a minute’s silence was held before the stones were revealed.
Rev Phillip Maries blessed the stones as well as leading attendees in prayer.
Anyone with a connection to Barnsley can purchase a stone or bench for the walkway.
Anna Hartley, executive director for public health and communities, said: “The walkway is an important place for reflection, remembrance and gratitude.
“Friday’s ceremony was a poignant opportunity to commemorate members of our Armed Forces community - and the vital role the armed forces community plays in Barnsley’s shared history.
“I’m really pleased that we can continue to unveil new stones on the walkway as a lasting tribute to loved ones who have served.”
