RENOWNED Barnsley sculptor Graham Ibbeson’s latest work was on display at Oakwell on Saturday as plans to fund a Kes statue in London’s Leicester Square gathered pace.

The life-size model of Kes’ Billy Casper, called the ‘Spirit of Defiance’, was shown to spectators from the pitch-side on Saturday.

David ‘Dai’ Bradley was in attendance on the pitch, as was Ronnie Steele - and both spoke to the crowd to tell them of their ambition.

Ronnie told the Chronicle: “We thought it went brilliantly.

“We managed to get our message over which is great.

“It was great to have David there as well.

“We think that we’re going to need around £35,000 all in all and we’re hopeful that we’ll be able to raise that.

“We know that we’ve got a place down there in 2028 and back in 2016 Barnsley took over 30,000 fans down to Wembley.

“It’d be great to just see 1,000 people from Barnsley down in the capital for the unveiling and paint the city red.”
