WHETHER he’s on skates or wheels... the puck stops with young Teddy Crossley.

The ten-year-old from Tankersley is excelling in both ice hockey and the in-line version.

His list of accolades in both sports are already racking up.

On ice he’s won the best defender and player’s player of the year award with the Sheffield Ice Hockey Academy.

He was fast-tracked up to play at under 12 level despite being younger than his teammates.

This week he is off to Latvia to play for Elite British Selects.

In inline hockey he’s won a national tournament at under eight level and been a central league winner.

He was also a runner up in the Toxic Tournament where he won the best defender award.

He has also played in a tournament in Spain and will be off to the USA to play in NARCH tournament this summer.

It has earned him a nomination in this year’s Young Champions awards.

His mum Michaela said: “We have always encouraged Teddy to be active and develop a love of sport.

“He tried football, swimming, and Taekwondo, before getting into ice hockey. He is a strong and capable all-round sportsman, who loves many sports.

“Teddy’s journey at ice skating started with a family trip to the Sheffield Arena to see Disney on Ice in December 2013.

“The week after this we went to watch the Sheffield Steelers and Teddy was hooked.

“He asked to go skating at iceSheffield the following February half-term holiday, when he was six-years-old.

“He worked hard to pass all the eight ‘Learn to skate’ awards and joined the Sheffield Ice Hockey Academy in the under tens’ age group.

“He loved all types of hockey (watching and playing) this led him to start playing inline hockey too for Norton Cyclones.

“He enjoys playing in defence, and his passing is a real strength.”

Teddy’s determination to improve is admirable for someone so young.

“Teddy loves the sport and trains six days a week, at least,” added Michaela.

“He is happy to get up and travel with very early starts to attend games all over the UK.

“He also loves watching and attends all the Sheffield Steelers and Steeldogs games.

“He has private lessons with current Steeldogs players, who are fantastic role models.

“Teddy dreams of being a professional ice hockey player.

“He also does off-ice training several times a week which involves running, and gym work, and stick-handling.

Teddy is currently in year five at Tankersley St Peter’s Primary School.

He is a ‘Sports Ambassador’ developing his leadership skills by helping younger children be active at break and lunchtimes, and also helping with equipment and activities in PE lessons.

Teddy has been captain of the school hockey team, who have played tournaments in the Hoyland Sports Partnership, and have won gold medals for two consecutive years.

Michaela said: “As parents we are very proud of Teddy’s achievements and his hard work to improve as a player and develop into a dedicated sportsman.

“He is always calm and mature when playing the game and willing to listen and to learn.”
