BARNSLEY MP Dan Jarvis said it was a ‘privilege’ to attend the unveiling of a blue plaque in honour of a Dambuster.

Sergeant David Taylor Horsfall took part in perhaps the most well-known bombing raid of all time when the 617 Squadron used the famous bouncing bombs of Barnes Wallace to attack the dams of Nazi Germany’s industrial heartland, the Ruhr Valley.

Sergeant Horsfall was 23 years old when he died on the return journey home, just miles from the English shoreline, with all lives on board the aircraft lost.

His blue plaque was unveiled at a special event on Saturday at Shaw Lane Sports Club.

Dan said: “It was a privilege to attend the unveiling of a blue plaque in honour of Sergeant Horsfall, one of the legendary Dambusters who went to school and lived in Barnsley.

“Night after night, bomber command crews knew there was a very real chance they would not return.

“Then and now, we owe a debt of gratitude to those who serve to keep our country safe.

“It is important that we always take time to remember them and recognise their sacrifice.”
