A TEENAGE composer with big dreams has enjoyed seeing her original piece brought to life by professional musicians.
Sophie McDermott, 17, has spent her life singing, but recently has made a transition into composition and has already made waves on the music scene.
The Penistone Grammar School student’s dream to become a professional composer is coming closer by the day.
As a part of the Guildhall Young Artists course, Sophie was delighted to see her song played live, performed by a soprano and pianist.
The Millhouse youngster is hoping to go down the conservatoire route to get into composition - a specialist higher education facility providing training for aspiring performing arts professionals.
Sophie said: “I’ve been singing my whole life, it was kind of a natural shift into composition.
“At GCSE level I was looking at what aspects of music I was doing better in, my performance or my composition, so that’s when I leaned into composition.
“Now I’m going towards more composing than I am singing.
“It can be hard to balance with mock exams, towards the end of last term I was prepping for my mocks but also had a drama exam.
“With the Guildhall Young Artists course, I recently had the premier of my piece which was performed by a soprano and a pianist.
“It was played at the end of term concerts in front of all of the mentors and other students on the course.
“It was really cool to hear, it’s only the second time I’ve heard my music played by live instruments rather than software.
“My favourite part was working with the voice, trying to do it on the computer just isn’t the same as hearing it with real sound.
“I’m currently doing music, drama and English so all of my post-16 options involve creativity.
“My dream is to go down the conservatoire route and hopefully be based at one of the big conservatoires in London.”
