COUNCILLORS nominated for cabinet positions have been confirmed ahead of today’s annual council meeting.
The meeting, at Barnsley Town Hall, will begin with a vote of all 63 councillors to appoint new mayor, Liam Hardcastle.
The new mayor will chair the rest of the meeting and all full council meetings until May 2027.
Councillors will also vote to officially appoint Councillor William Brown as leader of Barnsley Council.
If appointed, Coun Brown will then formally appoint his cabinet members, who were chosen following a ‘rigorous recruitment and selection process’.
If given the nod, Coun Edward Dillingham will become deputy leader and the cabinet will include Couns Rachael Kay, Martin Bancroft, Stan Bryan, Gary Hall, Paul Kelly and Andy Cudworth.
They are set to be helped by support members Couns Luca Turner, Kay Hughes, Betty Barnes, Vicky Jackson, David Goddard and Rocky Laybourn.
Coun Brown said: “I’m really excited about working with this strong team we’ve brought together.
“It’s been a rigorous selection process and my choices have been based on those who have the qualifications, suitable skills and experience to do a good job.
“They bring a wide variety of professional and personal skills and experience from a range of backgrounds, including, architecture, business, marketing, emergency services and engineering.
“Over the next two weeks, cabinet members will all be doing intensive work to understand the full picture of their areas of the council.
“We remain in a period of transition and we’ll come together in mid-June to agree on our shared priorities as a cabinet.
“After this we’ll update everyone on these priorities.”
The first cabinet meeting will be held on June 17.
Tamsin Brooke will take on the ceremonial role of young mayor.
