Friends of Ardsley Park has welcomed a £25,910 cash boost to improve the village's greenspace.
Robert Stendall is a member of the Friends group which, along with Barnsley Council, will help decide how the money should be spent.
He said it was welcome news and the group is 'really pleased' it has been allocated the funds via the council from the developer of the Leslie Road housing project in Kendray.
"We have already talked to the council's parks department and the children's play area in Ardsley Park has been put forward as a suggestion for how the money could be used," said Mr Stendall.
"The play equipment in there is dated and needs repair, so the vast majority of the money will going to update it for the youngsters of the village."
He said it is likely new fencing will be put up around the play area and the soft, spongy surface will be replaced.
He told the Chronicle some of the children's rides will eventually need replacing and, if there is any money left, the Friends group would like to develop a children's football pitch.
He added: "For younger people it would mean they would have a smaller size one than the adult pitch. In the long term we also want to develop a pavilion and changing facilities."
Brian Whamond, treasurer of the Ardsley Tenants and Residents Association (TARA), is pleased to see money being invested in Ardsley and hopes children will be consulted on what they would like to be improved.
Mr Whamond added: "We had an inkling this might be approved and suggested the children's play area should be updated.
"There is a small play area in the park and we have been involved in buying and installing picnic tables for there.
"We certainly do not have money that could buy new playing equipment but some of the items that are there, such as the swings and climbing frames, are in need of refurbishment and we would like to see something new come out of this funding.
"It is very welcome news because I don't think much money has been spent in the park over the last I do not know how many years."
