A Christmas fair and family concert will mark the reopening of St Mary's Church after it was closed for redecoration.

The place of worship, on Church Street, has been redecorated by the probation service after the plaster started coming away from the walls and the paint started to peel away.

Rev Patrick Duckworth said: "It really got to a point where we had to do something about it and so we made the decision to redecorate.

"But we only have a very small congregation and have no money so I approached the Probation Service."

Between three and six people have been working with supervisors since April and the congregation has worshipped at St Paul's, Old Town, while the work was taking place.

But they moved back last Sunday, which was Advent Sunday and marks the beginning of the church year.
