A BARNSLEY man who robbed a shop and threatened a man with a knife has been jailed.

On March 15, James Clayton-Walker, 41, of Pontefract Road, attended a store on Sidcop Road, Barnsley, and robbed the business.

Donning a balaclava, which he wore for only part of the robbery, Clayton-Walker threatened a man with a knife and stole £350 from the till.

Officers attended the scene, launched an investigation immediately, and recovered CCTV from the store.

Clayton-Walker was subsequently arrested and a search of his home found the clothing he wore, a balaclava and the knife.

During police interview he refused to leave his cell and swore at his solicitor. He was interviewed at his cell door and answered ‘no’ to all questions.

He subsequently pleaded guilt to possession of a knife in a public place and robbery, and was jailed for nine years and five months at Sheffield Crown Court last Tuesday.

Detective Sergeant Michael Wilby said: “This was a shocking crime in which Clayton-Walker confronted a completely innocent man while armed with a knife.

“I cannot imagine the fear that his victim must have experienced during the ordeal.

“Officers were at the scene within minutes of the robbery taking place and gathered crucial information from the location.

“Clayton-Walker gave us a head start in our investigation, removing his balaclava during the crime and showing his face clearly on CCTV.

“He also left lots of incriminating evidence, including the weapon, at his home.

“I am proud of the hard work of our officers to compile concrete evidence against him, and to ensure that he is behind bars.

“Offenders like Clayton-Walker, and others who engage in knife crime, have no place in our society.”
