A BARNSLEY roofer has secured himself a piece of history from legendary steeplejack and television personality Fred Dibnah.

Famous for his fearless chimney climbs and eccentric, down-to-earth charm, Fred became a national treasure and beloved champion of Britain’s industrial heritage.

Fred’s Land Rover was well-known across the country and local roofer Danny Smith has bought a part of its history.

He told the Chronicle: “I’ve been looking on the internet for years to find something that belongs to Fred.

“I’m a roofer who is obsessed with chimney stacks and I saw the back door of the Land Rover on a Facebook post.

“I asked if it was for sale and he politely said no but I couldn’t get how significant the door was out of my head.

“The Land Rover has seen most of Fred’s historical chimney fells so I wanted to make sure it was genuine.

“The garage was shutting down so I called and the door had been hung on the wall for 26 years.
