THE opposition party during the last stretch of former council leader Sir Steve Houghton’s tenure have praised him following his Lifetime Achievement award.

Steve has overseen a number of key projects in the town including Health on the High Street and the Pathways to Work scheme, leading Barnsley Council to be the first to be named Council of the Year at both the LGC and MJ Awards.

He received the lifetime achievement award from the Local Government Association last week.

The Barnsley Liberal Democrats, who were the official opposition in the town hall during Steve’s final few years as leader, praised him for his efforts.

A spokesperson said: “We may have had political differences in the town hall chamber but we fully recognise and acknowledge his lifetime of service to local government and the town.

“He has been a passionate advocate for Barnsley and a strong supporter of local democracy and the role played by councillors.

“He has consistently fought for a strong voice and fairer funding for local authorities.

“This recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
