NEVER mind the police trying to crack down on the boy racers on the Dearne Valley Parkway, what about them cracking down on them in the Morrisons car park in Cortonwood.

They should be parking up in an unmarked car and seeing for themselves the high performance cars being driven at maniac speeds around the car park where people are actively shopping.

What’s the store doing about them?

It’s been going on for AGES and it is just a matter of time before there is a fatality. THIS IS A CAR PARK, not a racing track. You dice with death if you go there after six. Never seen a copper there yet.

Anyone who has never heard of John Healey has now heard of John Healey. The ex-Secretary of State for Defence who quit his position recently after finding it untenable.

A man who could not accept the Grand Canyon between what the Treasury offered to fund the military and what he knows it needs.

There are those who say that this crunch point should have been reached sooner, but better late than never and we are now in no doubt of the outside threat we face if things do not change, that resignation letter was quite the exposure. Giving him the benefit of the doubt about the tardiness of his move, maybe he felt that he could ultimately make happen what he needed to happen.

In the end, though, his only option was to loudly throw in the towel and that is no mean feat for a career politician for as we know, principles and toeing the line in politics are enemies.

He offered solutions, the Treasury dug in its heels. And so Healey revealed the pressure and manipulations he was under to make the figures fit. Put the best man in the job and then hobble him.

So where is the money to come from? The welfare budget is five times what the defence budget is.

Sorry, we can’t cut that, we will penalise the vulnerable. No one wants that, but I’d happily penalise those getting payouts for anxiety caused by a broken fingernail and are laughing at us all?

The system is a joke and needs overhauling and fast. Apparently reallocating just one per cent of the welfare budget would take care of the present ‘black hole’ in the defence budget.

Let’s just talk about that black hole. Recent reports suggest the MoD loses £1.5 billion PER YEAR to fraud, error, cancelled projects.

Thee and me are working our arses off, stumping up our taxes on our wages, our savings, even our deaths and we may as well be throwing it into the sea (no warships to retrieve them either, we’ve only got a couple and they’re brok!).

I’d be sick if I didn’t think the government would lay claim to 40% of my vomit. Now our local MP has moved into the ministerial seat – it’s all happening in our neck of the woods isn’t it?

Dan Jarvis, army veteran, a man many believe is carved for the exact size of the vacant hole. An honour or a headache because what a terribly chaotic time to inherit the mantle.

Will he settle for the shortfall that Healey couldn’t (dear god I hope not)? Will Andy Burnham (course he’ll be the new leader) keep Dan on? Don’t pin your colours to Starmer, Major J. He’s clinging onto the cliff face with school glue. This is your chance to shine and do what is right. We need what should be a standard in politics, but sadly isn’t: honour and principles and to be safe in our own country. Now more than ever. Good luck.
