MOTORISTS and pedestrians have been warned of problems affecting hundreds of roads in Barnsley after sheet ice froze them overnight.
Thick black ice is already causing big problems on the regions roads with the A1/M1 already having closures due to 17 separate crashes.
Woodhead pass is closed due to the weather conditions and police and road safety officers have already taken to social media sites to warn the public about the treacherous conditions.
Chief Supt Jason Harwin tweeted: "Warning - road conditions throughout South Yorkshire are terrible. Please seriously consider if you need to travel."
According to the Met Office the ice has been caused by a downpour of freezing rain throughout the night.
A spokesman added: "That happens when rain droplets fall through air thats temperature is below zero and freezes on impact with the ground or another object to form clear ice – also known as glaze. Conditions have to be ‘just right’ to get freezing rain and it doesn’t happen very often in the UK, making it a relatively rare phenomenon."
