EOGHAN O’Connell has not returned to pre-season training with Barnsley and is not expected to sign the new deal offered by the Reds.

The Irish centre-back joined in January as a free agent on a short-term deal and played 26 games.

He is expected to join another League One club with Stockport County the latest name to be linked to him.

His departure adds to a list of experienced players to leave Oakwell this summer following the exits of David McGoldrick, Adam Phillips, Tom Bradshaw and the released Marc Roberts.

That leaves the senior centre-backs in the squad as Mael de Gevigney, Jack Shepherd and Josh Earl, who can also operate at left-back, while they also have Connor Barratt and Kacper Lopata who were loaned out last season.

Calum Hudson, 18, is set to join from Scarborough Athletic while they are in talks with Isaac Smith, 20, after a youth loan last season from Manchester City who he has now left.

Barnsley are expected to bring in at least one more centre-back.

Reports in Germany claim the Reds have tried to sign central defender Tobias Kraulich, who is out of contract at third tier Essen, but add that he is likely to stay in Germany.

The Reds are also thought to be looking at full-backs.

As well as Earl, they have Georgie Gent at left-back plus 18-year-old Robson Woodcock who has signed his first professional contract.

The only senior right-back is Corey O’Keeffe.

The exit of Jackson Smith to Port Vale last week leaves the only goalkeepers as academy graduates Kieren Flavell and Rogan Ravenhill.

Flavell, 22, has played 14 first team games while Ravenhill, 20, is yet to make his debut for his hometown club after being out on loan last season.

The Reds are expected to try to bring in a senior goalkeeper.
