Barnsley have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old defender Calum Hudson from non-league Scarborough Athletic for an undisclosed fee.
The former England schoolboys player was loaned out last season to Tadcaster Albion and Guiseley. He is expected to start with the under 21s but is seen a potential future first team centre-back.
As reported in last week’s Chronicle, another centre-back, Isaac Smith, 20, could sign permanently with the Reds this week following a youth loan from Manchester City.
The Reds are interested in Australian winger Clayton Taylor but the deal is not thought to be done as of Tuesday afternoon.
Hudson told the club’s website: “I’m delighted, this is a big club. I like what they do with bringing youth through into the first team, and I can't wait to get going. It's a great set-up in the under 21s and hopefully I can push onto the first team and perform well.
"I'm an aggressive defender who likes to tackle, and my main aim will always be to keep the ball out of the back of the net.”
Academy Manager Bobby Hassell added: “We’re looking forward to working with him over the next few years. He was highlighted by Brian Young, and after scouting him for months, we feel Calum has the right mentality and attributes to develop. He’s an excellent defender but needs to improve some areas which full-time football will enable.”
