Barnsley have signed defender Isaac Smith after his youth loan last season.

The centre-back, who turns 21 later this month, has signed a two-year deal with a one-year option in the club's favour.

He came through the Manchester City academy and had injury issues in recent years.

The former England under 17 international is expected to be in the first team squad while also playing for the under 21s.

Smith told the club website: “I just want to build on what I started here. I feel like people have trusted me to do a job, and I want to do it properly. I’m really happy to get the deal done, and now it’s about playing as many games as I can, improving, and helping the team win matches.”

Head coach Daniel Stendel said: “Isaac is a player we’ve been aware of for some time. Although we’ve only had a few days working together on the training pitch, I’ve watched a lot of his performances through video. He is comfortable on the ball, reads situations well and has the attributes we value in a centre-back. These first few days have been positive - he has settled in quickly with the group and shown a good attitude towards learning and improving. We believe he has strong potential, and we’re looking forward to working with him properly over the coming weeks and helping him continue his development.”
