Barnsley lost 2-1 at League Two York City in their second pre-season friendly of the summer.

The hosts took the lead but Cameron McGeehan levelled late in the first half but York netted a penalty late on.

The Reds were second best, not looking fluid in attack and very vulnerable from counter-attacks – with the lack of players in attack and defence clearly showing.

Defenders Isaac Smith and Jack Shepherd were both nursing injuries and captain Luca Connell not involved after returning to training late as agreed with the club.

Clayton Taylor played up front with Vimal Yoganathan just behind him, Reyes Cleary on the left wing and Patrick Kelly on the right.

Yoganathan saw a tame 20-yard shot saved in the first minute then, after a mistake by Kacper Lopata, York’s Dipo Akinyemi was played through on the left of the box but shot over.

Patrick Kelly volleyed over a left-wing cross by Reyes Cleary then lofted a header from a Taylor cross into the arms of the goalkeeper. Mark Shelton blazed over the bar for York after a nice move on the right.

Bland shot over after a corner was half cleared but York took the lead soon after. Greg Olley was allowed to run to the edge of the box before he found the bottom right corner.

Akinyemi could have made it 2-0 but curled wide from the edge of the box after latching onto a long ball. Yoganathan headed over after Lopata nodded a Corey O’Keeffe corner back across goal.

Barnsley were totally caught out on the counter-attack with Olley travelling about 50 yards with the ball before playing through Akinyemi who was denied one-on-one by goalkeeper Rogan Ravenhill.

The Reds levelled on 38 minutes when, after a short corner on the left, O’Keeffe’s cross was met by McGeehan who took a touch then finished from close range.

In the second half, Yoganathan had to come off with what looked like a knee injury after challenging the goalkeeper. He was replaced by Leo Farrell.

Cleary brilliantly nutmegged a defender in the box then crossed low but McGeehan could not turn it in from close range.

The Reds then made nine changes with a host of youngsters coming on along with Kelechi Nwakali and Mael de Gevigney.

The hosts re-took the lead on 77 minutes when Ollie Pearce netted from the spot after Arley Kay was judged to have shoved Pearce over almost on the line when he looked certain to score.

Luke Alker headed wide from a Charlie Lennon cross then several shots from range were easily saved.

Ollie Banks shot over from just inside the box after another decent York move. Pearce then hit the post after receiving a cross from the left and turning.
