THERE was more heartbreak in an England shirt for Barnsley man John Stones on Wednesday evening.
The 32-year-old ex-Red from Thurlstone started the 2-1 loss in the World Cup semi-final in Atlanta against Argentina.
The defending champions cancelled out an Anthony Gordon goal with an equaliser on 85 minutes then won it in injury-time, prompting intense criticism of England manager Thomas Tuchel’s tactics and substitutions.
England will now play in the ‘bronze final’ against France on Saturday evening.
Stones has 93 England caps and has gone to six major tournaments.
Having been on the bench for four games, he returned to the starting line-up for Saturday’s quarter-final win over Norway then the semi-final.
Stones’ future is now unclear as he left Manchester City in May after a glorious stint which saw him win seven Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five EFL Cups and a Champions League final.
Former Barnsley loan striker Ivan Toney made his first appearance of the tournament in injury-time against Argentina.
