WINTER survival kits have been distributed to vulnerable people across
Barnsley following the freezing weather.
Barnsley Council has teamed up with NHS Barnsley to distribute the kits to
elderly and struggling families as part of their 'Warm Homes, Healthy
People' campaign.
There are more than 4,000 packs, which contain a blanket, gloves, hats,
socks, porridge oats, and an alarm to make people aware when a room drops
below a certain temperature.
The packs will be distributed by volunteers after the council received
funding of £206,000 from the Department of Health.
It is estimated that 140 people in Barnsley die each year of winter related
conditions caused by low temperatures and being too cold in their own homes.
Older people who may be frail or have existing health conditions are
particularly at risk.
