BARNSLEY are in safe hands with new loanee goalkeeper Cieran Slicker who has been backed to have a successful season in League One following a spell in the fourth tier with Barnet.

Slicker signed on loan from Ipswich Town last week for the remainder of the season.

The 23-year-old, who has one cap for Scotland, came through the Manchester City academy and was named on the first-team bench on five occasions under Pep Guardiola, including a UEFA Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig.

During his time at the Etihad Stadium, he also gained senior experience during a loan spell at Rochdale AFC, where he worked under former Reds defender Jimmy McNulty before signing for Ipswich.

Having played one FA Cup game for The Tractor Boys in 2025 as a substitute, he spent last season on loan at Barnet in League Two and made 43 appearances with 15 clean sheets.

Barnsley are thought to be considering bringing in another goalkeeper with Slicker currently supported by academy graduates Kieren Flavell and Rogan Ravenhill - at least one of whom could be loaned out.

The Reds sold Jackson Smith to Port Vale earlier this summer and loanee Owen Goodman returned to his parent club having taken over as number one from Murphy Cooper half way through the season.

Nick Sandamas from the Barnet Post told the Chronicle that Barnsley have a really good player in their ranks in Slicker.

He said: “Cieran had a successful season with Barnet where he would become one of the standout players in a season where they missed out on the play-offs by a whisker.

“He was brought in by manager Dean Brennan just after the start of last season on loan and the 23-year-old quickly settled in North London.

“The former Manchester City trainee caught the eye as the season progressed with a number of eye-catching displays.

“This obviously caught the eye of Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel and he now has the opportunity to continue his development in League One where he will gain more experience at a different level.

“One thing is for sure, the Tykes have a keeper who will do well.”
