SHOP owners and councillors have called for CCTV to help cope with the ‘crime wave’ sweeping Hoyland town centre.
The demands come after the Co-op was raided early on Tuesday.
The Co-op's shutters and windows were smashed at about 2.50am. Manager Mike Taylor said three people, all wearing balaclavas, used bins to clear the shelves of cigarettes. They escaped down Market Street on foot but left behind two of the four bins they had brought with them.
The methods have been compared to previous break-ins in the town where bins were also used.
A police sting was launched two nights later after intelligence suggested there would be a second burglary but four officers waited at the Co-op through the night in vain.
Hours after the raid on Monday paper girl Emily Oliver, 13, of Oak Close, had her bike stolen.
