POLICE will be out in force on mischief night as officers crack down on drunken and firework-throwing youths.

Bonfire night and Halloween will also be targeted as officers prepare for a wave of anti-social behaviour.

Police have been running test purchases in shops around the borough and many officers’ leave has been cancelled on November 4.

Sgt Derek Barker said: “Traditionally we get all sorts of problems with anti-social behaviour around mischief night, Halloween and bonfire night, especially with the sale of fireworks and alcohol.

“This year, I hope everybody has a really good time, nobody gets injured and everybody just enjoys it as it should be.”

New legislation means that people now need to be 18 -years- old to carry a firework in a public place and there is a minimum fine of £80 for anyone caught.

Penalties for serious firework offences can be as much as £5,000.

Legally, stores can only sell fireworks between October 15 and November 10 unless they have a special licence and police are appealing to the public to report any shops not complying.
