David Flitcroft said he relishes the prospect of working with younger players and hopes he has the chance to develop them long-term at Barnsley.

The Reds boss put 19-year-old midfielder Sam Patterson on the bench at Cardiff for the first time alongside fellow youngsters Danny Rose and Andrai Jones.

Flitcroft said he isn't worried about his small squad and is delighted to give young players the experience of the Championship.

"It gives them a taste of what we're about and it's great for them to be around the first team squad," Flitcroft said.

"There's a different remit here and I want to be here long-term, there's no doubt about that. I want to build something.

"Danny Rose belongs on that bench. It gives the youth players great incentives to come to a place like Cardiff and be a part of what we're doing.

"We trained at Birmingham's training ground on Monday and the young players can see what they can be by going to these places."
