Barnsley Football Club's Player of the Year dinner has been cancelled for the first time in 50 years after less than 60 tickets were sold.

The function was due to take place at the Holiday Inn on Monday night. Last year, the club also scrapped a special 125-year dinner it had organised after failing to sell enough tickets.

Director Don Rowing told the Chronicle: "We've had to cancel due to a lack of support. It seems that these events are old hat so we're going to call it a day this year and look at it again for next season."

The Player of the Year will be announced on the pitch at Oakwell before the Hull City. There have been more than 1,000 votes so far.
