Barnsley manager David Flitcroft says he might have to keep the club in the Championship in order to hold onto his job but would like to be the Reds boss next season whatever division they are in.

Flitcroft, who is contracted as manager until the end of the season, said: "I want an opportunity to stay at the club next season and, to do that, we might have to stay in the Championship.

"That was the remit when I first took the job and I bought into that and the players did as well. I would love to be here next season but it's not my decision."

Barnsley have confirmed this week that they will lose between five and six millions pounds if they are relegated and Flitcroft is aware his team are fighting for the futures of the playing and non-playing staff.

The manager said: "If you're relegated, you're looking at downsizing your operation and jobs could be at stake. We have got a lot of players who have been in League One and League Two and want to stay in the Championship. We have got so much to lose."
